About the Artist: Sonya Baughman (Andrews)
My name is Sonya Baughman (soon-to-be-Andrews) and I am a life-long resident of Kansas City, Missouri. I’ve been drawing and painting for many years and am a Studio Arts graduate from the University of Missouri - Kansas City with an emphasis in graphic design. While I enjoy graphic design, I would much rather be painting! I’ve never really given a lot of thought to what one would call my “style.” I paint colorful, expressive, semi-realistic and semi-surrealistic paintings, whose level of seriousness generally depends on my mood or, in the case of comissions, the client. Occasionally I will produce something completely unlike anything I’ve done before.
I paint things to reflect not only how I see the world but also how I feel about it.
I think that my goal for the art I create is to provide people with a window into something beautiful and enjoyable and that makes them feel just a little better about the world around them. I want my art to make people think and feel, not about social problems and political unrest (there's enough people reminding us of that), but about making life better for themselves and others, full of joy, color and sillyness. I want them to wake up in the morning, look at my painting while sipping their coffee and reading the morning paper, smile and stretch and give a little sigh of satisfaction.
General Sonya Stats:
I am married (as of Sept. 17th, 2005) to the marvelous Paul Andrews and together we have two lovely dogs. We both play in The Afterparty (Paul on drums, myself - one of three back-up girls) and he also plays in the country cover band, Outlaw Jim and The Whiskey Benders. Paul is also a photographer and will soon have a site that I can link to!
I also spend part of my time being a seamstress for my friend's company, Party Time Costumes, and have recently begun helping another friend start her own sewing business, Blubelle: Apparel and Accessories.
